Prince Edward County Public Schools (PECPS) proudly announces that Bruce Davis, Supervisor of School Nutrition, earned top honors at the Virginia Childrenβs Book Festival Chefs Cookoff, showcasing his culinary creativity and representing the division with excellence.
The Chefs Cookoff brought together culinary talent, literature, and the arts in an engaging event designed to celebrate creativity and inspire young learners. Inspired by chef and author Daniel Nayeri, this yearβs competition challenged participants to create a Persian-inspired dish featuring five distinctive ingredients: pomegranate, saffron, pistachio, honeycomb, and caviar.
Mr. Davis drew bone-in chicken thighs and rice as his primary ingredients and developed an original dish titled βGlossy Pomegranate Ginger Glaze Stuffed Chicken Thighs with Saffron & Pistachio Rice, Ginger-Roasted Sweet Potato PurΓ©e, and Persian-Inspired SautΓ©ed Green Beans (Khorak-e Loobia Sabz).β
After evaluation by a panel of judges, Mr. Davisβs dish was selected as the winning entry, highlighting his culinary talent, creativity, and willingness to embrace new challenges.
βI was truly honored and grateful to have my dish selected,β said Davis. βThis experience was about so much more than cooking. It was an opportunity to step outside my comfort zone, collaborate with talented chefs, and be part of an event that celebrates children, creativity, and literacy.β
Although the competition celebrated culinary excellence, Davis emphasized that the children who attended the festival were the true beneficiaries of the experience. The Virginia Childrenβs Book Festival provides opportunities for young readers to meet accomplished authors, discover new stories, and explore the connections between literature, food, and the arts.
Davis also expressed appreciation for fellow chefs Grace Dupont, Tammy Nelson, and Raf Dimano for their participation, creativity, assistance with plating, and encouragement throughout the competition. Their camaraderie and teamwork contributed to an especially rewarding experience.
Prince Edward County Public Schools recognizes the importance of learning opportunities that extend beyond the classroom. Events like the Virginia Childrenβs Book Festival encourage children to explore new interests, engage with the arts, and develop a lasting appreciation for reading, creativity, and lifelong learning.
βMr. Davisβs achievement is another wonderful example of Eagle Pride in action,β said Dr. Jones, Superintendent of Prince Edward County Public Schools. βWe are proud to celebrate his accomplishment and the talent, creativity, and excellence our Eagles demonstrate both inside and outside the classroom.β
PECPS extends its sincere gratitude to the Virginia Childrenβs Book Festival organizers, participating chefs, authors, and everyone who helped make the event a success.
Congratulations to Bruce Davis on this outstanding achievement and for representing Prince Edward County Public Schools so well!
